EXCLUSIVE: My Issues With D'Banj, Wande Coal and Don Jazzy ––Sunday Are

Click for Full Image Size
It has been long the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of List Entertainment, Mr. Sunday Are spoke extensively on major industry issues. The former Manager of the defunct Mo’Hits Records broke his silence in a recent chat with Rasheed Abubakar of Encomum Magazine.

He opened up on life after the shocking break-up that scattered one of the biggest Record Labels in Nigeria and other issues that many do not know about...

Being a veteran artiste manager, how has it been?

The only thing I can say is I am working and I have not stopped working because it’s a job that gives me joy. I have passion for my job. I love the job and that is why you’ll see me at some event, not because of the money but the passion. Beside, my core work is field work, which is setting up stage, sound and light until when I diverted into artiste management. In fact, I prefer to be addressed as a stage manager than artiste manager because that’s my foundation.

For instance, I coordinated all the artistes that performed at the launch of Mo Abudu’s EbonyLifeTv and Dare’s "Love Like A Movie Concert". I paired Pa Victor Olaiya with 2face, Evangelist Ebenezer Obey with M.I, Elegant Stallion Onyeka Onwenu with Omawumi and King Sunny Ade with Wizkid for tight rehearsals in my office during the EbonyLifeTv lunch. It was a tight concert and I feel honoured for such events. Honestly, I still want to do my stage management work even though I still love managing artistes because it’s something I love doing as well.

Let’s talk about the business of managing artistes. How profitable is the business?

It is the joy of everyone to do business and make profit from it, but for me; it is not about the money. When I joined the industry in 1979, I didn’t think about making money, my love for music was the driven force because as at that time, I had nobody, I just lost my dad. So I had no family around but I know a group and somebody that do music. I went to him and I told him my intention to join him. That’s how it all began. About profitability, you can ask all the artistes i have worked with.

I have managed from D’banj to Omawumi, I didn’t start working with them base on money. Even when I set up the band for D’banj, I don’t think he or the group pay me to set-up the band. I did it because I love D’banj’s style of music and I want to see him performing with live band until later when they started making money. We began to take budget for that. Even for promotion, I used my money to promote their songs because they have good materials.

From experience, what are the usual challenges of managing artistes?

Every profession has its challenges but for me, I have always been happy with the people I have or I am working with. If you do what I want, I will be happy because I cannot withstand challenges. So, I will rather break-up with you before the challenges would come. I always see the signs coming in most cases, that is why it’s hard for you to see any artiste that would come out and say he sacked me.

I have seen you at couple of shows full of energy to ensure that your artistes are satisfied with your services. Where do you get the energy even at your old age?(Cuts-in) I am still young; I am still here (smiles). The fact is I love my job and I love everybody that I work with. I always want them to see me as their body, so we work together even though they are the one you see on stage. It is not the matter of old even though I am still a young but the love for the job. I love my job and I think that is the source of the energy you see me displayed.

There is a general impression that you’ve lost your core job since the broke up of Mo’Hits. How true is it?

Lost my core job? I don’t think so because the name, Sunday Are has been there for long and my prayer is that it would remain forever. What many people don’t really know is that before Mo’Hits eventually broke up, I have made up my mind to stop working with D’Banj. Don’t get me wrong, D’Banj is one artiste I will continue to love whether we see or we don’t see, whether we talk or we don’t talk. Personally, if I am working with you and I don’t love you, I won’t achieve anything on you. So for me to achieve my mission on you, I must love you. But for D’banj, I see it coming. The love I have for him was dropping and two weeks before they announced their break-up, something happened between us during a show in Asaba, and that night, I wouldn’t lie to you, I said to myself, I am not going to work with him again. Like I told you earlier, I can’t withstand challenges, so before it comes, I took the decision.

Would you like to share what happened between you and D’banj?

It’s best known to us and I think it’s not important any more. Truly, I was not happy during the period but that was then. Life goes on and till tomorrow, he’s somebody I still love, respect. So, I thank God that he’s doing well and I am also doing fine. I am very happy because I know what I have achieved since they left. I know what God has done for me since they parted ways.

Aside D’banj, do you still have a working relationship with Mavin artistes?

The thing is, when I stopped working with D’Banj, I still maintained my working relationship with others in the Mo’Hits but I never knew they had planned to break-up. When the break-up came, I went back to the drawing board and plan my next move. Although I still get shows for them or connect clients with the right people they needed to call to get D’banj, Wande Coal and others for shows, even for Tiwa Savage. There’re some I collect service charge but in most cases, I did it for free. So, it wasn’t like the working relationship I have with them as members of Mo’Hits.

But there have been different reports that you manage D’Prince, Dr. Sid, even Wande Coal before recent story that Wande Coal sacked you for Nana Abbey, one of your boys. How true are these reports?Like I said, we still have a very good relationship but not really a working relationship. They call me “our daddy” any time they see me. So, where they employed me as their manager I don’t really know. It sounded a bit insulting when I heard it but it is one of those things. For me, I don’t think anyone of them needs me as hype because they are already super stars.

The person that was said to have sacked me (Wande Coal) and the one they sacked me for (Nana Abbey) are my children. I remember how his parent brought him (Nana) to learn under me not even to work. It was very ridiculous to see the headline; Wande Coal sacks Sunday Are, his Manager, for Nana Abbey! Nana Abbey is my son and Wande Coal has never employed me before.

What about your appointment as one of Don-Jazzy’s aides?

That word - aide - sounds weird because if you check my age and that of Don-Jazzy, the gap is wide. Let me tell you the truth about myself, I am a proud person and I respect myself. I may not be more than this but I know my worth. So, I am not comfortable with the word. But, the truth of the matter is that he called me one afternoon that my children (referring to Dr. Sid and D'Prince) are missing and they wanted to see me. I told him I would be travelling out of the country. So, when I came back, we met and he specifically told me that I should take care of Dr. Sid and D’Prince the way I am taking care of my artistes. That was about a year after they registered Mavin Records. I accepted and collected their materials, their singles and I did the promo CD for their new songs.

So, it is not like a Management deal but rather helping them because of the bond we’ve shared together.

OMG!! See The Stab Wounds Davido's Bodyguard Received During Club Fight (SEE PHOTOS)

You saw the tweets yesterday from people who said they witnessed the fight at the club early Monday morning...now Davido's camp have released pictures of his injured bodyguard, TJ, who was allegedly stabbed twice, in the neck and the hand, by the DJ of the club. They also released a press statement explaining what happened that day. Find the statement below and more photos of TJ after the cut...

The facts: DJ Jaydee of Grotto stabbed Davido's bodyguards, evades police
Falsified accounts of a recent incident at the Grotto club on Sunday have made the rounds. Davido’s Management hereby wishes to clear the air on them with the statement below.
After a successful outing at a recent concert on Sunday November 3 at Eko Hotels, popular musician Davido headed to the Grotto Nightclub on Victoria Island. After a brief stay at the club, Davido and his crew proceeded to his vehicle outside to head home. Upon entering the vehicle, he realized that his ATM card was missing. His body guard TijaniOlamilekanOgbeidebetter known as Teejay got down from the vehicle to search for the ATM card in the club.

Upon alighting, he was accosted by an already drunk ‘DJ Jide Jay Dee’who had in his hand a champagne flute. This DJ Jaydee informed Teejay that he had the ATM card in his hand and would like to personally deliver it to Davido. Teejay politely asked him to hand over the ATM card as it was clear that Davido was right in his view in his car. DJ Jaydee refused to hand over the card without payment and instead proceeded to shout that he knew who Davido was personally and that he [DJ Jaydee]was a known person in Lagos. Teejay refusd him access to Davido which led DJ Jaydee to throw the ATM card on the ground  in anger. As Teejay bent to retrieve the card, DJ Jaydee stabbed him in the neck with the champagne flute he was holding. An oblivious Teejay threw him off his back and proceeded to return the ATM card to Davido. As he was entering the car to leave, one of the occupants noticed the stab wounds and called his attention to the blood. Teejay promptly alighted from the car and went to confront DJ Jaydee who was still yelling outside.DjJaydee apparently not done with his violence stabbed the bodyguard a second time, this time on his hands and ran off into the club. Teejay searched for him to no avail and left the club soon after.

Tijani Olamilekan Ogbeide has since reported the matter to the police and they have been to the club to invite DJ Jaydee for questioning. Grotto has been unable to deliver DJ Jaydee to the police, instead malicious and falsified accounts of the incident have found their way on social media portals being championed of course by sources intent on casting vile aspersions on Davido  and his bodyguard Teejay. DjJaydee is yet to surface.Tijani Olamilekan Ogbeide has pressed charges to this effect.

Davido’s management categorically refutes all the allegations of violence as insinuated by some. Teejay was carrying out his job by restricting access to Davido from an unknown and obviously inebriated and violent individual. He performed his duties as bodyguard and instead of resorting to violence, followed the dictates of the law.Members of the public and fans should please note that Davido was not present at this unfortunate incident that occurred that night as erroneously reported in a few quarters.

Thank You

Fans Expect Too Much From Celebrities, But Do I Care- Alibaba Writes

Click for Full Image Size
Alibaba and His Wife, Mary
This is a very interesting revelation from Nigeria's king of comedy, Alibaba. Please learn from it:

I know some people will not like this write up. But I am sure they can only assimilate what their heads can process. So, "what cares me?"

Weeks back, I was talking with General Gowon, he had a bone to pick with me, IRO how some comedians are taking the comedy Licence too far. He had just hit a sore part in the conversation, when a call came in, I peeked, XYZ Fan Lagos, so I silenced it. General Gowon said, go ahead, you can take your call. I said, I will call the person back. And I heard him out. I had to.

When he was done with his meal, I called the comedian involved, a senior comedian and he tendered his apologies. Luckily, the comedian was in Lagos. So, before the event ran out, he came personally to apologize. General Gowon even gave the guy 20k for transport. (Guess what he gave me? A pat on the back. And NA me make call).

All sorted, I remembered XYZ Fan Lagos, opened phone to make the call and saw a text:
"DONT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE FEELING LIKE? YOU CELEBRITIES ARE ALL THE SAME. ARROGANT FOR NOTHING. I AM A BUSINESS WOMAN, I DONT NEED ANYTHING FROM YOU. JUST WANTED TO SAY HI. LEARN TO BE HUMBLE AND PICK YOUR CALLS. IT COSTS YOU NOTHING. ITS FANS THAT GOT YOU WHERE YOU ARE. YOU JUST LOST A FAN. HAVE A NICE DAY"

I took it all in, went through what happened again in my head and replied by text:
SORRY, I WAS BUSY. TRUST YOU ARE GOOD? NO VEX, WHATS UP?

And the fan's reply hit me like a punch:
"TOO BUSY FOR YOUR FANS. ARE YOU THE FIRST TO BE POPULAR? WE CALL.... (Name withheld) AND HE CAN TAKE OUR CALLS ANYTIME. WHO ARE YOU?"

That's how XYZ FAN LAGOS became "DONT PICK 215" on my phone.

I know there are some people out there that would quickly say, why didn't you pick the call, when General Gowon said you could pick the call. You obviously have not lived with older people. How many times, did you hear your Mum, while you were young tell you to take something that was offered to you on a casual visit to some family friend, and you knew right away it was a trap? Them no born you well to drink that Maltex. You simply say NO THANKS, and swallow your Maltex induced saliva. I know a trick question when I hear one.

Some others would argue, why did you not answer, and say you will call her back? Really? Did you not hear that what I was being talked to about was something bothering on another shade of disrespect, only more grievous?

I am a celebrity, if I can call myself that, but heyyyyyy! I get my life too. I am also a grown man, a grand father, and a fan too. I don't call people I celebrate like that. Can you imagine me beefing Gamaliel Onosode for not taking my call? Or Bola of Jacob's Cross, for not replying my text? I FAMZING people too. I call big men too. When they don't pick, I send them texts. Sometimes I even send text asking when it's ok to call. Sometimes. I get called back.

Agreed being popular comes with these trade hazards, and some celebrities have their noses in the air, I dare say, one bad apple DONT spoil the whole bunch. Surprisingly, these are the people who are even more craved and raved as celebrities than the ones that rub shoulders with fans.

Till tomorrow, if a fan calls me and I have something more important than being MR nice guy, sorry, important wins! That also goes for when I am driving. That's importance right there. In fact, that is N25,000 to the FRSC coffers that I am not ready to pay. Unless it's a new number plate. That's important. Not to mention that it is life-threatening-important. If I have an accident while taking the call, same fans will say, maybe he was drunk. Maybe NA God punish am. Maybe... NA blood money. Or illuminati

Maybe, you are one of those fans that thinks all your calls must be answered, get a grip and get a life!!! Even Almighty God called Samuel 3 times. He didn't stop calling. So if you call and your call rings out, send a text. "Hey, guess you are busy. I am a fan. Just wanted to say hi. Have a good day". This kind of text, not only gets you a call back, it drops "fan" from your name. Could get you a random, out of the blues wazzzzap call sef.

The customer is always right, they say. True. But sadly, some of you are not buying. You are not even customers. You are not even window shoppers. You just want to be FAMZING on celebrities that others have made! Mscheeeeew! The real fans understand. Real fans send birthday cards. Real fans create fan pages. Real fans pray for celebrities success. Real Fans are not those who wait at car parks to ask for anything for the boys? Full-grown-above-NYSC-age9-limit-men claiming boys! TUFIA!! Real fans meet you at airports and buy you a first class ticket... I hope

I REST MY CASE!
