My Style: Brenda Chuinkam

Brenda My Style - June 2013 - BellaNaija031I would love to think my personality is as colorful and adventurous as the person I am” – Brenda Chuinkam
My Style is one of our favourite features on the BN Style page, and judging from the responses it gathers, I can safely say, it has our readers interested.
BellaNaija reader Brenda Chuinkam of  beauty and style blogCanneverbeaskinnybish is our My Style focus for this edition. She is a Cameroonian style and beauty blogger that loves to dress up and look pretty. With a curvy body and a love for body con dresses, Brenda likes to dress sexy at all times. Find out about how she expresses fashion and how her personality makes her style pop.
My Style Is
Fun, cute and sexy. I love that I accentuate my curves even in subtle ways without coming off as a “hoochie.”
Style Meets Personality
My style is happy because I am a happy person. I believe my personality is as colourful and adventurous as I am. I love trying new things – from trying new food to going on a helicopter ride or even moving to a new city. I express this in the bold colours and prints I wear.
Although when I’m in a less happy mood, I tend to be attracted to darker colours in my wardrobe.
Where I Shop Till I Drop
My favourite places to shop are basically on-line stores because I hate going to malls. I like stores like Asos, H&M, Zara, Lulus, Gojane, Shoedazzle, Andrea Iyamah, Designofadiaspora, Zeena Kay, Forever 21, Boohoo and Topshop.
I used to have a very unhealthy shopping habit which stemmed from the fact that I never created a budget for myself. My shopping used to be; see, like and buy. I always ended up regretting it. Thanks to some good counselling from my brother, I was able to come up with a great budget based on my income. I have a fixed amount that I spend on clothes and that amount increases when Isell my old clothes. So I created a store where I sell the clothes I don’t wear any more The money I make becomes extra money for clothes. This way I can shop without going into my savings.
Hair Glam
My hair has actually been changing recently. For a long time all I did to my hair was braids – box braids to be specific. Then I tried to use weaves but now I think I’ll be going back to braids pretty soon. I find them easy to maintain and versatile. My hair is natural underneath so I am growing it out until it reaches a certain length. Then I’ll be rocking my afro. I find that I am not creative when it comes to styling my natural hair so I’m working on that.

What I Wear to Work
My regular day look is always appropriate enough for work, but I am not a fan of wearing the corporate look every day. So I switch it up. Instead of that, I wear maxi skirts, leather jackets, shift and body con dresses as well as cute mini skirts. Whatever I’m wearing to work usually involves throwing a blazer on top-just to be on the safe side. I can’t risk losing my job for the sake of fashion.
I Own the Night
I hardly go out at night but when I do, I like to pick a subtle but attention grabbing dress that is still classy. I love to accentuate my curves and I find that bandage and body con dresses as well as cute skirts do this for me. During the cool nights, a black leather jacket is a must for me.

The Bare Accessories of Style
I am one of those people who has a lot of jewelry. I used to wear a lot of accessories but now I keep them to a minimum. The ones I wear the most include my watch, a leopard print scarf, my cat-eye sunglasses, my white and gold dangling earrings, a set of gold bracelets and 2 cute gold necklaces.

My Advice for Other Stylistas
I don’t like giving “advice”, I like giving my opinion and whoever wants to take it can. What I would say is get to know what looks good on your body. I know that certain styles of dresses and skirts that look horrible on me and I stay away from them. No one can tell you what to wear, but people can tell you what you look better in – not everyone can where cropped tops and shorts and still look cute.
Also go to stores and try on clothes just to see what colours, textures and cuts accentuate your natural beauty and body. Never wear something because it is “in”. This is because you may end up looking like a clown and as quick as it became the “it” thing, is how fast it will be “out of fashion”. Then you’ll be stuck with something you bought in the spur of the moment.
I Love Bold Colours

If I Could Steal a Celebrity’s Wardrobe
I would like to mix up several wardrobes because I don’t think anyone out there has a complete wardrobe. I would mix Solange KnowlesShirley B. EnaingAgatha of Irony of AshiBeyonce,  Kim KardashianRihanna, Yvonne Nelson, Duchess Kate Middleton and Audrey Hepburn‘s wardrobes. See what I meant by there’s not just 1 single person? With all of these combined, I would be able to have the most versatile wardrobe.
Which Celebrity Stole My Look
Eku Edewor. She’s just the slimmer, richer version of me.

My Style Philosophy
Wear what looks good on you. The philosophy of my blog revolves around this subject. I was once an obese teenager and then I went on to become skinny with a very bad eating habit. I became the skinny girl I wanted to be and yet it wasn’t enough. That’s when my body retaliated and I got really curvy so I had to work hard to tone up.

A Beautiful Nigerian & American Wedding in Alabama! Brittany & Timi’s Lovely Day

A true celebration of Love!  BellaNaija Weddings is once again joining forces with Munaluchi Bride Magazine. The BN Weddings team told you that we will have you swooning today with two wedding features and Brittany and Timi’s romantic affair is a must see.
Timi Tuamokumo, a Nigerian physician based in the US and American medical consultant Brittany Dawson are literally a match made in heaven.
Timi spotted Brittany at the University of Alabama’s Match Day and within 2 seconds of sighting, he fell in love with her. Later in the evening at the Match Day party, they were introduced by a mutual friend and instantly hit it off.
For the beautiful day in Alabama, Brittany Dawson was a gorgeous damsel in a strapless white frock and a chapel veil. Her princess seaming wedding dress with artistic ruffles on the skirt, was styled with black earrings and sequined silver flats. Timi complemented his wife in a sharp single button black suit.
After the cutting of the cake and the father-daughter dance which Brittany calls one of the most memorable moments of the event, the couple, the bridal party and their parents all changed into traditional Nigerian attires as they reentered the reception hall with Nigerian music playing.
Enjoy!

How They Met
From the bride: My husband and I met when I was a 4th year medical student at the University of Alabama in Birmingham on the most important day for a medical student, Match Day. This is the day where all medical students across the country find out where they will be going for their residency.
Timi came to support some of his friends and find out where they had “matched” to. Somewhere in the hustle and bustle of the crowd as I crossed the street with my family, Timi noticed me without my knowledge. He said he only saw me for 2 seconds, but at that moment he got an intense feeling and he knows God created that moment for a reason.
After my family had returned home, I attended our Match Day party. A mutual friend of ours told me how his friend Timi was asking about me and essentially told me he was a great guy that I should give a chance. Timi states he had no idea he did that, but is forever grateful for him putting in a good word.
Despite being on a gruel schedule with long hours, Timi came to our Match Day party just to meet me. He approached me and we started talking. He asked me to dance and we took the floor to B.o.B.’s Nothin’ on You. At the end of the song, he dipped me and that’s when I decided I’m going to really give this guy a chance. We exchanged numbers and the rest is history.
Culture
After cutting the cake and the single men skirting the garter toss, we incorporated my husband’s Nigerian roots. The bridal party, our parents, Timi, and I changed into traditional African outfits as we reentered the reception hall with Nigerian music playing. Our family friends joined us on the dance floor while people spraying us, which entails tossing money on the bride and groom to celebrate their union. The night was truly amazing and I still find myself reliving all the great moments.
