[CAREER] “Perfect is Not an Option! It is A Mark of Excellence” 4 Tips For Every Business Owner

As I waited outside the barber’s shop, I looked up at the entrance and saw a sheet of paper taped to the glass door. On it was a phone number- the barbers’. However, it was a 10-digit number; the last digit was missing. Staring hard, I noticed the missing digit was actually there, but was hidden away from view by some other piece of information that had been taped to the door. I sat there wondering the number of people that would have needed the barber’s services and got to the door only to find an incomplete number which made it unable to contact him.
As insignificant as this error may seem to you, it is by no means so. That the barber had actually put up that number in the first place means he probably understood that there would be times when people who didn’t have his contact would be at his door when he wasn’t around, and would need to reach him. But Mr. Barber, how can they reach you when the last digit of your phone number is hiding behind that sticker?
This oversight happens to even the best of us. As business owners we need to regularly check all our marketing materials to ensure nothing is out of place.
Entrepreneurs, let’s dust out the cobwebs. Here are a few checks you need to make.
Your Business Stationery
Entrepreneurs who have been in business for many years are more prone to business card errors. You started business in 2009 as a Make-up artiste and you printed your business cards listing your services as “wedding makeup, gele-tying, makeup training, skin-care consultation, Event-planning.” Three years later, you have stopped offering makeup and gele-tying services, all you do now is event planning. However,  you still pass around your business card that lists all those services you have stopped providing.  Now and again, a prospect calls your phone line to book your makeup services and you keep saying  “ermm… … I’m sorry, I don’t do makeup anymore, only event planning.”
You  go to a networking event, or bump into an old friend, and you exchange cards, next thing they are referring their friends to you for your makeup services which you don’t run anymore, only for them to call you saying Shakira gave them your contact and you have to give them the sorry line. How tacky is that?
Check your business card. Is the business name on it the same one you are using now, or have you changed it?
Are the services listed on it still the same services you offer? Do you have Veterinary Doctor written, when what you do now is Pet sales? Do you have additional services that are not written out on the card?
Is the office address on it still the same address you occupy? Do you have Obele-Oniwahala street on it, when you have moved to Adeola Odeku street? When you printed your cards your office was number 38, after the last house re-numbering by the government, your number was changed to 42. Is it the old number 38 that’s on your card? You don’t want to have clients looking for you at number 38 and instead of your eye-clinic they find a dentist’ place. A friend of mine who is a marketing executive went looking for her client whose office was supposedly at number 54 in a certain market premise, alas, what she found at number 54 wasn’t her client’s office. Apparently, that was his old address. Now you don’t need these errors in your business, do you?
Or your business card reads  “Eleke crescent” which is now Walter Carrington crescent, and your prospective clients go out trying to locate Eleke crescent which no longer exists?
Check your office phone number. You printed your stationery back in the days when NITEL lines were functional, now they’ve been wiped out but  your card still lists that NITEL number as one of your office lines. No way! The only numbers on your card should be the ones that are valid. Customers shouldn’t be calling non-existent lines and wondering why they never get through to you.
Some years ago, I headed the administrative office in an organization. I remember my boss calling me out for still making use of office stationery that had old, non-functional phone and fax numbers. He found this totally unacceptable, and asked that I call in the printers to produce new stationery with the current office details. At this time, we still had thousands of un-used stationery, but because he was one who always paid attention to the tiniest of details, he couldn’t continue with the flawed documents. By the way, why do you have a fax-number on your card when it doesn’t work?
Your Signage
Next check you need to make is your signage. Are the details up to date? You shouldn’t have a sign above your office, with the inscription ‘Chic-Choc House of Chocolates’ when what you now have inside is a florist’s store. No, I didn’t come for flowers; I came to buy a box of chocolates for my girlfriend! Your sign must indicate the accurate business name and service.
Many times I see signs with some letters fallen off from the board. Where there used to be eye clinic, there’s now “e clinic” (with the ‘ye’ in eye gone). Sometimes you might find an alphabet that has turned upside down. This is not acceptable. Has any part of the information on your sign been washed off or distorted by the wind or rain? Fix this.
Your Company Brochure/Flyer
Read through your brochure/flyer. Confirm that every detail is accurate and up-to-date, else, you’ve got to edit and reprint. You will not have the opportunity to explain to everyone who gets the promotional materials that “sorry, we no longer provide personal home fumigation services, we only serve corporate customers now.” Be wary of ‘typos’! No sort of typographical error should exist in your materials. Set a standard for yourself, whether you are a legal practitioner, fashion stylist, or cleaner!
There is dignity in labour, it is the standard you set for yourself and business that determines how you will be perceived and regarded.
Your Website
Your website is your online location, while your office is your offline location. The same way you don’t want your clients knocking on your office doors and finding no one, you don’t want them visiting your website and not finding the information you claim is available.
Visitors to your site shouldn’t click on an information link only to find it’s a dead-end containing no content. For instance, I recently visited a company website and clicked on the link titled ‘our services’ it didn’t direct me to any information. Nothing came up.
Regularly click on all links and pages on your website to ensure they are up and running. Also ensure your website address is correctly listed in all your stationery and promotional materials.
These checks may seem unnecessary to you, but trust me, they are highly important. Errors in any of these categories can reduce the number of customers you could have had. It can affect the way your business is perceived- you don’t want prospective customers thinking of your business as ‘just there’. They should see your business as exceptional.
Dear entrepreneur, perfection is not an option; it is a mark of excellence. It is a must-have, and traits of perfection are found in the little things that count.

[INSPIRED] Hot Topic: Having Kids… The Guilt Trip

My friend, Mo, asked me to come and rescue him from what he called an “irritating situation”. I was to show up in exactly 2 and half minutes and ask him to come and buy Sharwarma for me; that way the person bugging him would have no choice but to go away. So, I did as I was told but I had to know what exactly the person was saying to him. Apparently, the guy was preaching about how Mo needed to settle down and start a family so he wouldn’t be the oldest person at his son’s graduation. “That’s all? That’s what you dragged me out here to come and save you from? Women deal with this stuff EVERYDAY son! Deal with it!”
The issue of this ticking biological clock is something we deal with everyday because with every second that passes, we’re getting older. Last week, Spanish model and sister to actress, Penelope Cruz, Monica Cruz gave birth to a baby girl. 36 year old Monica told the press that she had always dreamed of having her own child and she decided to go for artificial insemination. As a single woman, it is something I have always thought of as requiring a lot of bravery.
It is often said that a woman’s chances of being fertile begins to decline immediately she hits 35 and you find a lot of women rushing into marriages because they want to have children but they don’t want to do it outside of wedlock. Unfortunately, there are times when there’s no husband in the horizon and these women still want to have children. Surely, one cannot begrudge a woman who feels the impulse to be a mother. I know of a woman whose husband died and they didn’t have children together.  A few years after he died, she got pregnant and had a little girl. The prying eyes of the world wanted to know who the father of her child was and her response to them was “It is none of your business. I want a child to love and care for but I’m not ready to emotionally commit to another long term relationship/marriage”.
I have an aunty who was unlucky in love so she adopted two kids. Her son got married last December and her daughter is graduating this year from medical school. There’s a certain glow around her and she always attributes it to the stars of her life – her children. She didn’t let anything hold her back from getting what she always wanted. There were a lot of people who questioned her decision and called her names but she always stuck to her decision.
There are a lot of professional, beautiful and smart women today who want to take the leap and just go with their natural instinct for nurture because they want to do it while they are physically and mentally able to do so. However, they’re second-guessing themselves because of societal and cultural “norms”.
There are so many more stories that I could share with you but I think I’ve gotten a certain point across. Should society determine whether or not we should have kids? What’s the origin of the stigma behind having children out of wedlock in any situation? Who determines the right time to have children? Marriage, religion or family?
Let’s discuss!

Alula and her Mum
If you`ve heard of this cliché, “The rich also cry”, then what you`re about to read will tell you more that, not all that glitters are gold. It is a shocking story of one of the grand daughters of the fabulously rich billionaire businessman, Olorogun Michael Ibru whose reckless lifestyles is second to none.

The fatty 19 year-old girl, Alula is the gift of the love-gone-sour relationship between Gloria Ibru, a.k.a Mama G-the first daughter of Olorogun Michael Ibru and actor cum popular gospel singer, Sammy Okposo.

According to sources, Alula Okposo by her status in the society is one of the luckiest girls on earth, the grand-daughter of Olorogun attends one of the most expensive schools in the United Kingdom where she pays Ten Thousand Pounds (British Pounds Sterling) about N2.5m per term. And people close to the Ibrus confided in National Enquirer that, the spoilt brat was expelled for spending her school fees for a whole term (N2.5m) partying, drinking, smoking and enjoying life to the fullest.

Alula, 19 who`s a chain smoker we gathered is presently in the center of a marriage break-up between one of her school mates, a British girl, Clea Carl and one Tim Bode Idowu Jnr., a London based high profile music promoter, CEO of Pattern Entertainment and co-founder of SN1 Group who coincidentally happens to be her (Alula) father`s friend.

We gathered further that Tim 37, who schooled and lives in the UK with his parents and other siblings has been dating Clea Carl, Alula`s school mate for a while and the duo had already chosen August 2013 date to seal their liaison before Alula came in. The well connected Tim has worked with the likes of Giggs, (Nathaniel Thompson) who won the BET Awards for Best UK Rapper in 2009 and Nigerian born Tiny Temper who was the only rapper that performed at the 2012 London Olympics.

His mother, Grace Idowu who we gathered is one of the most influential Black Women in Peckham area of London runs David Idowu foundation in honour of her son stabbed about 5 years ago, the woman of substance also won Tesco Mother of The Year, 2012.

Our high dependable family source told this magazine that, in what looked like a planned script, Tim got invited to the Ibrus` Apapa residence sometime last year in one of his journeys to Nigeria for a get-together and the rest has been history since then, the next thing was that, the duo of Alula and Tim fell head over heel in love, going to places together including clubs and they were conspicuously seen during Alula`s birthday celebration at Liquid Lounge on Victoria Island, Lagos, Encomium Black & White Ball and so on where her father who didn’t know anything posed with Tim in a photograph.

Alula, we were told kept bombarding Tim`s blackberry phone with different nude pictures until Clea who was Alula`s Friend in school got wind of it when she saw Alula`s several nude pictures in her fiancé`s phone. We learnt that Clea fainted on the spot, with the phone in her hands when she saw it. And when she was revived, she immediately cancelled their wedding plans, which was why she was in Nigeria in the first place, and jetted back to the UK, leaving a devastated Tim.

The unsuspecting British girl got practically broken down emotionally that she had to call-off the wedding plan, shocking enough was that, Clea saw different text messages and voice mails of their love affair, heart breaking nude pictures and the monies Alula had demanded from her man. In one of the messages, Alula was said to have asked Tim for N500, 000 to rescue her from being expelled from school but no one knows if she got that before bubble finally burst recently.

Alula's Mum

Alula`s parents, Sammy Okposo and Gloria Ibru we gathered are fully aware and are making sure they stop the relationship even though it`s almost too late. Sammy, the source told us scolded Alula at a function that he almost slapped her, we don’t know if it was in connection with the shameful affair.

In our facts finding mission, we put a call through to Alula to ask her about the request for over half a million naira from Tim, and if really she truly squandered her tuition fee on booze at the clubs back in her boarding school at Reddington in the UK, to hear her side of the story, and to our amazement, she flippantly told this reporter, “yes o! I spent all my school money at the club, with my brothers, we were just flexing and honestly, I did not know how it got finished, I was just having fun! But wait o, who told you? Tim never gave me that money I asked from him, if he did, then why am I still in Nigeria? I was expelled from school because I couldn’t raise the money on time, which is 2.5 million naira. Is he saying he gave me? Is he crazy? Does he know who my parents are?”

Bode, posing with Sammie Okposo, Alula’s dad

When she was asked about Clea, and if she’s aware that the pictures she sent to Tim had shattered their wedding plans, she laughed out sarcastically, and said, “Look the only Clea I know, is Clea Blackwood, and she was my junior, back in school and I have no idea what pictures you are talking about! Why would I send nude pictures of me to someone who is married, or engaged, or whatever? And by the way this Tim, you are talking, about, I don’t know him! The person I know, that came to our house is called Bode, who says he runs pattern music or so, and yes we had something, I just loved his accent, the way he talks to me at night and all that, but then my parents said they didn’t want me to have anything to do with him, and I stopped seeing him! I even deleted him off my BB contacts. Look I know you are just making up these stories, because I didn’t send any pictures to anybody. So you can do what you like, I don’t care. And please don’t even call me again. In fact I dare you to do anything!”

When we called Mr. Tim Idowu Jnr, to react to the story, after several messages he refused to reply, all we could hear on the other end of the phone, was a thick British accent raining swear words on us and Alula! He said a lot of unprintable things. Well, we promise to keep you updated as the story unfolds!

[Music] : DammyKrane[@dammy_krane] - Lobatan + Gratitude

The man of the moment and Hypertek’s very own superstar Dammy Krane makes a huge splash in time for the Summer with the release of three exciting new singles - “Lobatan”, “Gratitude” and the previously leaked “Xteristics”…

Produced by TinTin, “Lobatan” sees Dammy Krane excellently fusing his modern Fuji vibes and sensibility with what can only be described as a mixture of synth-heavy Dance instrumentals and a Dubstep musical milieu, to resounding results.

“Gratitude” on the other hand is 21st Century Fuji music from Dammy Krane with Spellz providing the befitting production with lush drum patterns, talking drums and synthy keyboard arrangements, over which Dammy Krane waxes lyrical in his trademark Fuji vocal cadence and commanding flow.

Dammy Krane and Spellz link up once again on the mid-tempo “Xteristics” which has already become a fan-favourite after leaking on the internet a few days ago and being supported by all the leading online tastemakers. For good reason too, Dammy Krane shows his smooth and sultry side to perfection on “Xteristics”.

Whatever your tastes and preferences are, Dammy Krane does more than satisfy them with these three new singles. Not only that, he shows his vast repertoire and versatility in delivering excellent hit singles over several musical styles.
