R&B singer Chris Brown had his probation revoked on Monday by a judge in Los Angeles after he was charged in a hit-and-run traffic accident last month.

Brown, who has been on probation for criminal assault for beating his former girlfriend and fellow R&B singer, Rihanna, on the eve of the 2009 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, could face jail time if he is found to have violated his probation.

The Grammy-winning singer, 24, was released on his own recognisance and will have a hearing on Aug 16 to determine whether or not he has violated the terms of his probation, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge James Brandlin said.

He was sentenced to five years’ probation, 180 days of community service and domestic violence counseling for the 2009 assault on Rihanna.

The Los Angeles County Attorney’s office, which has also accused Brown of cutting corners on his community service, asked Brandlin to revoke Brown’s probation because of the hit-and-run charges in which he allegedly rear-ended another car. The singer was charged last month with misdemeanor hit-and-run and driving without a valid license in connection with the traffic accident on May 21 in Los Angeles.

Brown’s defense team and the alleged victim filed a declaration on Monday to have the charges relating to the hit-and-run dismissed. The Los Angeles City Attorney’s office said they planned to proceed with the case.

Chimamanda Adichie wins American prize

Renowned Nigeria Novel writer Chimamanda Adichie, has been awarded the 2013 Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize for fiction. This is the third novel that Nigerian writer will published which title ”AMERICANAH”.

According to Elizabeth Taylor, the literary editor of the Chicago Tribune, the prize is awarded yearly in two categories, fiction and non-fiction, to books that are concerned with American issues, causes and concerns.

“We loved AMERICANAH. It’s a powerful, resonant novel and we would be delighted to celebrate it and try to share it with a wider audience,” Taylor wrote.

“I’m very pleased,” Adichie said on receiving news of the prize. “You never know what will happen when you write a novel. And for me, a Nigerian, to have written this book which is partly about America, and to receive this quintessentially American prize means that I have said something about America as seen through Nigerian eyes that Americans find interesting. I take that as a wonderful compliment. It reminds me of the ability of literature to make us become briefly alive in bodies not our own.”

Past fiction winners of the Heartland Prize include Jonathan France for his novel FREEDOM and Marilyn ne Robinson for her novel GILEAD

The prize will be awarded on November 3, 2013 at an audience-attended event hosted in partnership with the Chicago Humanities Festival in Chicago.

CUPPY FT TUNJI OYELANA - I LOVE MY COUNTRY

Cuppy, the UK based superstar female DJ, who has decided to release her first single from her upcoming EP, which is billed to drop this summer. She has created an interesting and unique sound, which blends Afrobeats with the internationally popular Dance/House music. The song titled, “I love my Country”, is a remake of an 80’s hit which was written by Nobel laureate, Chief Wole Soyinka and originally sung by ace Highlife musician, Tunji Oyelana.
Wole Soyinka and Tunji Oyelana composed the song, which was first sung during one of Soyinka’s major theatre presentations, “The Beautification of Area Boy”, but then grew to become a huge hit with music followers at the time and went on to sell many records in the early 80’s.
